Actuarial Science and Statistics, BS - Actuarial Science Option

Actuarial Science Degree Program

Learn how to determine and assess risk in the University of Central Missouri鈥檚 Actuarial Science and Statistics bachelor鈥檚 degree program. The Actuarial Science option teaches you everything you need to know to become a professional actuary for insurance companies, financial institutions and government agencies. The program requirements are developed based on industry best practices and approved by the Society of Actuaries (SOA). 

In fact, UCM鈥檚 actuary program is recognized by the SOA as a UCAP-AC program (Universities and Colleges Actuarial Programs - Advanced Curriculum). This means your classes cover topics you need to know for certain SOA preliminary exams. We also offer Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) courses to further enhance your professional preparedness opportunities.

What you will study

As part of your actuary degree requirements at the University of Central Missouri, you鈥檒l take courses that build skills in actuarial mathematics, risk management, predictive analytics, finance, accounting and economics. Core courses you鈥檒l take include:

Curriculum recognized by the Society of Actuaries 

UCM鈥檚 UCAP-AC-recognized program covers course material needed for at least four SOA preliminary exams. This also means you鈥檒l benefit from us offering VEE courses, which are required to become an associate-level actuary. Accelerated BS/MS program 

Get a jumpstart on a high-powered career. If you meet certain requirements, you can become eligible for the BS Actuarial Science and Statistics/MS Mathematics - Actuarial Science and Statistics Option accelerated degree. In this Actuarial Science program, you鈥檒l be able to complete both your bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees in only five years.

  • Internships: Take advantage of UCM鈥檚 convenient location near Kansas City by applying for an internship to get on-the-job training. Past Actuarial Statistics majors have found placements Aethna, MetLife, Sun Life, and many more.
  • Dedicated computer labs: Get experience using statistical software common in the industry in UCM鈥檚 computer labs that are dedicated to Actuarial Science and Statistics majors.
  • Student life: Join The Actuarial Organization (TAO) at UCM for networking and professional development opportunities with local insurance companies, alumni and Career and Life Design Center staff. Members of this student club also get together for social activities, including guest speaker events.
