Mission of the School of Industrial Sciences and Technology

The mission of the School of Industrial Sciences and Technology is to prepare students to be management-oriented technical professionals and entrepreneurs for positions in business, industry and government.

Career-focused curriculum

Through flexible, student-centered undergraduate and graduate programs, the UCM School of Industrial Sciences and Technology will give you a hands-on educational experience supported by a dedicated team of distinguished researchers, engineers and scientists. Every faculty member has direct experience in the field, and they bring their years of experience as leaders and scholars into the classroom to help students apply their knowledge to real-world settings.

All of our major, minor and certificate programs integrate experiential learning through in-class projects, internships or study abroad. Earn course credits and build an impressive resume through working with local companies and organizations, as well as in our state-of-the-art labs and classrooms.

The programs in the School of Industrial Sciences and Technology hold accreditations by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) and the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) and prepare you for a broad variety of careers through a focus on the necessary soft skills that can apply to any industry. Our graduates leave with mastery of a diverse range of skills, including creative problem-solving, leadership, collaboration and effective communication — making them impressive candidates for graduate programs and jobs in nearly every industry.

Our ATMAE-accredited Design and Drafting Technology/CADD programs provide you with the support and resources you need to become a designer or manager in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. Thanks to our focus on the latest theories and methods of design, combined with internship opportunities, you’ll graduate with the knowledge and skills to stand out from other job and graduate school candidates.

Engineering Technology at UCM

 
Earn an ABET-accredited Engineering Technology degree to prepare for a number of career fields in the engineering world. From robotics and automation to industrial engineering and engineering management, our Engineering Technology programs have everything you need to excel as an engineer and a leader. You can also prepare to earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at a college or university with our pre-professional cooperative program in engineering.

Regardless of whether you’re looking for a bachelor’s degree, minor or professional certificate in fashion, we have the degree for you in our AAFCS-accredited Fashion programs. Learn the fundamentals of fashion merchandising, product development, marketing and entrepreneurship at a university close to Kansas City, a growing fashion hub just 30–45 minutes away from either campus.

At UCM, we offer three industry-relevant concentrations to help you get the career in Information Technology you desire. Graduate programs

 
Elevate your eduation and your career with a graduate level degree or certificate. The School of Industrial Science and Technology offers two MS degree programs, two Graduate Certificates and a Ph.D. consortium program. Both MS level program have been accredited by the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) since 2008.

 

 

General Goals for School of Industrial Sciences and Technology Programs

The faculty of the School of Industrial Sciences and Technology (SIST) are committed to continue to improve the quality programs currently being offered at Central. The faculty incorporate this vision into their plans for the future, with the long-term goals stated below as guidelines to ensure that our programs will remain viable.

Goal #1: To continuously develop activities and associated laboratories to enhance student professional development as well as supporting the development of the Innovative Campus and Curriculum. This goal is in direct support of Central’s statewide mission in Professional Applied Sciences and Technology.

Strategies: To seek additional State funding, to seek external funding through the industries served by the relevant degrees, to seek new professional faculty and develop current faculty who can provide the technology and management expertise necessary to teach the curricula.      

Goal #2: To continue to develop the Automotive Technology Management, Construction Management, Design & Drafting Technology, Engineering Technology, Information Technology, and Fashion: Textiles and Clothing in Business programs into the premier programs of their type in Missouri.

Strategies:  To continually seek the advice of the academic advisory boards (which may be defined as a group of persons selected from business or industry, and the professional community) to advise educators regarding professional programs of study.  The purpose of the academic advisory boards is also to: assist with the maintenance of nationally accredited programs, continue and expand our participation in leadership roles of our professional organizations, continue the efforts of the faculty with the Continuous Process Improvement of the University, and establish additional networking and alliances with related industries.

Goal #3: To increase the number of students enrolled in the School's programs by 30 percent between the years 2014 to 2024.

Strategies: To continue the efforts of public school service by providing expertise to area schools through consulting, contests, and career day activities.  Additionally, through increased publicity such as: web and mobile based materials, newsletters, videos, publications, and personal contacts by current faculty with prospective students SIST’s service to the secondary school system can be enhanced.  Increased levels of financial support are available to students through: scholarships, grants, employment, and internships, as well as actively seeking students to increase the diversity of our student body.

Goal #4: To develop and revise curriculum materials in order to reflect student outcomes based on identified competencies and criteria, which will allow self-assessment and external assessment of programs.

Strategies: Use industry/graduate /employer survey research, current literature, and Industry Advisory Boards to identify competencies and include them as an integral part of the course content.  These measures are part of the SIST formative assessment process.

Goal #5: To continuously refine the curriculum and produce graduates that meet or exceed industry expectations.

Strategies: To continue use of input from the academic advisory boards, employer/graduate surveys, program student exit interviews (in order to involve students in curricular developments); and to stay current with new industry developments.  This is part of the SIST summative assessment process.
